Eines der bekanntesten Werke von Feininger. Feininger hat viele Bücher zu ähnlichen Themen veröffentlicht. Dieses Werk scheint mir insgesamt den besten
Überblick zu geben. Seine Art an die Dinge heranzugehen muss man mögen. Er ist sehr strukturiert und versucht die verschiedenen Gebiete der Fotografie zu gliedern. Man lernt hier viel
über Fotografie, auch wenn man schon Jahre Fotopraxis hinter sich hat. |

Take your Photography to the next level, George Barr, Rocky Nook, 2008, ISBN: 978-1-933952-21-5
George´s book is about you as a photographer. He discusses multiple questions like why do you take photographs, which are your main interests and do I
photograph what interests me. A theory tells that you’ll only be good in doing something if you gave a deep interest in it. But George goes one step further.
By trying to find out what your current status in photography is he also investigates ways t improve your skills. He gives detailed instructions how to find
your level and what option you have to get to the next level. It will not be easy to follow all his hints and tricks, you probably need to reread parts of the
book and find out yourself if you are ready for the next step. This makes the book a practical assistant for your experiments. Recommended! |

Mastering Landscape Photography, Alain Briot, Rocky Nook, 2007, ISBN: 978-1-933952-06-2
Even though I wouldn’t call myself a landscape photographer I was very interested in Alain’s book. Regular visitors to the Luminous Landscape we page might
already know Alain, who is also interviewed in one of the Video Journals. His articles on the Luminous Landscape were actually the base for this book. He
starts with the question: why are you doing what you are doing. Well, sounds a little bit trivial but he just investigates if you really do what you like to. A
theory is that many people are seeking for something and are pretty happy that their goal might never be reached; hence, they are dreaming a unrealistic dream.
This might be very philosophical but Alain’s idea is that everybody could change their life and do what they really want to. At least he tells us that’s what
he has done. Perhaps it’s a little bit naïve to assume that everybody else could do it too. But back to the book: The book has two main parts: the first covers
traditional topics like what lens to use, how to choose the right cropping and how to choose the correct exposure time and aperture. The second part covers the
topics around being an artist and an artist in business. Even though I’m not really impressed by his photographs (perhaps it’s because they are shown that
small in the book, I have never seen an original photograph from him) he is or at least was very successful as an artist in business. The whole story is very
interesting even though there is a lot of simplification. However, Alain gives many hints and food for thoughts.

You might know Bill Jay as the editor of the long gone British photo magazine Album or from his editorials in the Lenswork magazines. In this book (and Bill
has written a whole bunch of books) he interviews the ex Magnum photographer David Hurn. This is not the transcript from a single interview but rather a
summary of many interviews and discussion they had in the past. The text is therefore in depth and most topics are not only touched on the surface. With Bills
deep knowledge about photography and David with years of experience in active and teaching photography it is worth reading and learning from them.

Markus Schürpf und Matthias Frehner, Paul Senn: Fotoreporter, Scheidegger und Spiess AG, 2007, ISBN: 978-3-85881-197-4
Der Schweizer Fotograf Paul Senn lebte in der ersten Hälfte des 20sten Jahrhunderts und war als Fotoreporter tätig. Das besprochene Werk ist
in Folge einer grossen Retrospektive über Senns Werk am Kunstmuseum Bern entstanden. Senn dokumentierte auf eindrückliche Weise das Leben in der
Schweiz, im nahen Ausland und in den USA in der Zeit um den zweiten Weltkrieg. Es ist erstaunlich welch grosse Anzahl Reportagen Senn in seinem kurzen Leben verfasst
hat. Senn ist ausserdem einer der ersten Farbfotografen. Dieses Werk gibt einen weiten Einblick in Senns Leben und Schaffen; ich kann es
jedem der sich für die Fotoreportage interessiert wärmstens empfehlen.

Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Sophie Troubac, Beruf: Fotograf, 2004, Knesebeck GmbH, ISBN: 3-89660-210-1
Yann Arthus-Bertrand ist vor allem für sein Buch " Die Erde von oben" bekannt. Es zeigt viele Luftaufnahmen aus verschiedenen
Regionen der Erde, die Yann aus allen möglichen Fluggeräten gemacht hat. In dem hier besprochenen Buch geht es aber nicht um seine Fotos sondern um die Person Yann bzw. um den Fotografen Yann.
Eine spannende Geschichte eines engagierten Fotografen der viel gesehen und erlebt hat. Als Extra liegt dem Buch eine gut gemachte DVD bei, die die Themen des Buchs aufgreift und aus anderer Perspektive zeigt. Die beiden Medien
ergänzen sich sehr gut. Der Abstecher in die Welt von Yann-Bertrand ist empfehlenswert. |

Der Schweizer Fotograf Jakob Tuggener wird vielen kein Begriff sein. Vielleicht haben Sie schon einmal etwas von seinem eindrücklichen Bildband 'Fabrik' gehört, das in den 50er Jahren entstand. Das hier besprochene Buch wurde anlässlich einer Ausstellung von Jakob Tuggener im Kunsthaus Zürich aufgelegt und dokumentiert die verschiedenen Schaffensperioden von Tuggener, von seinen Fabrikfotos über die Dokumentation des ländlichen Lebens in der Schweiz bis zu seinen bekannten Ballfotos. Das Buch besticht durch spannende geschichtliche Hintergründe und viele tolle Bilder. Tuggeners fotografisches Werk wird durch seine Aktivitäten als Maler und Filmemacher beeinflusst und bereichert. Besonders der Vergleich Tuggeners mit seinen Foto-Zeitgenossen, z.B. Senn, ist spannend, ihre Auffassung und ihre Ansichten könnten unterschiedlicher nicht sein. |

Für jeden interessierten Wetterbeobachter der schon versucht hat verschiedene Wettersituationen und Phänomene fotografisch
festzuhalten ist das Buch von Andreas Walker ein Muss. Der Autor hat all jene fotografischen Experimente schon durchgeführt die man schon lange geplant
hat: Kein Grund es nicht gleich selbst zu versuchen. Im Gegenteil: Das Buch gibt Anregungen zum 'Wetterfotografieren'.

Hat man Andreas Feiningers Bücher über Fototechnik gelesen (z.B. das oben besprochene 'Grosse Fotolehre') darf man es nicht verpassen
seine Bilder zu studieren. Viele Themen, die in den theoretischen Büchern besprochen werden, finden sich in Feiningers Aufnahmen. Der Bildaufbau, die Auswirkung verschiedener Brennweiten und perspektivische Effekte sind in seinen Aufnahmen sehr schön illustriert. Ausserdem ist Amerika eine wunderschöne
Dokumentation über das 'alte' Amerika.

Über New York gibt es sicherlich eine Unmenge Bücher, über das New York der 40er wird es schon weniger geben. Feiningers Werk beeindruckt ganz besonders. Die
bekannten Tele-Aufnahmen von Manhattan, den Fähranlegern, den Häuserschluchten, die vielen Brücken Manhattans aber auch die Strassenszenen und z.B. die Aufnahmen vom Strand in Coney
Island strahlen eine ganz spezielle Atmosphäre aus. Lassen Sie sich die vielen guten Bilder nicht entgehen!

Der Bild und Textband ‚Zeitblende' ist anlässlich des 50 jährigen Bestehens der Magnum Fotografie, bzw. der Magnum Fotoagentur, erschienen. Drei Autoren erzählen über die
Gründerjahre, die Gründerfiguren und welche Rolle Magnum in all den Jahren gespielt hat und was die Ziele der Agentur waren und sind. Es ist erstaunlich wie viele bekannte Fotografen mit
Magnum zu tun haben bzw. hatten. Dieser riesige Band (über 460 Seiten) gibt einen guten Überblick in das hochinteressante Feld der Reportagefotografie.

Winter on the finnish Taiga, Hannu Hautala, Otava Book Printing Company, 1999, ISBN: 951-1-11264-3
Ich kenne nicht viele Bände über den Winter in Finnisch Lappland. Dieser ist der vollständigste. Umso mehr erstaunt es, dass nur ein Fotograf, Hannu Hautala, es fertig gebracht hat
einen so umfassenden Bildband zu schaffen. Praktisch alle im Winter zu sehenden Tiere sind abgebildet (es gibt wenige die jemals einen Vielfrass in Finnland beobachten konnten). Beeindruckend sind
auch die Aufnahmen der riesigen Eismassen, die sich im herbst ansammeln und dann im Frühling beim Schmelzen eine Flut erzeugen. Den Aufnahmen sieht man zwar an, dass sie mit hochempfindlichem
Film gemacht wurden. Aber vielleicht sind wir im digitalen Zeitalter diesbezüglich ein wenig übersensibilisiert. Auf den Bildinhalt kommt es schliesslich an. Und in der dunklen Jahreszeit
bleibt dem Fotografen praktisch nur die Wahl höherer ISO Zahlen.

Well, I really can’t say that I have read this book simply because it is written in Finnish and I do not speak that language. I bought it
because of the pictures. It’s definitively not like all the other tourist books available in the shops in Northern Finland showing colourful pictures of
auroras. This book goes deeper. Seppo shows a deep interest in the mechanics of auroras. He added some nice graphs about the height and visibility of auroras
and what you can capture with certain lenses. The book is not limited on photographs of auroras but also some star constellations, comets and atmospheric
phenomena like halos and coronas are captured. Here is also an experimental photograph showing the scintillation of stars which I have not seen in any other
book (yet). |

The art of nature photography, Niall Benvie, David & Charles Book, 2000, ISBN: 0-7153-0967-6
Niall is a Scotland based nature and landscape photographer. This book captures in-camera and in-computer techniques. It is one of ma
favourite book about photo equipment because he not only concentrates on what to use but also why he selected certain equipment and he explains how to use it.
The second part explains in-computer techniques. Even though the programs are outdated as the book was written in 2000, the techniques explained are still
valid. The book is completed with his excellent photographs of landscapes, wildlife and also macro photographs most of them captured in Scotland but also in
Norway. I’ve read this book at least two times: recommended! |

John Shaw is a very productive author: You’ll find a good selection of his books reviewed below. Nature photography is the newest one I have
read. If you plan to only read one of his books, this is probably the best one to select. This is a classic starters book covering topics like equipment,
selecting lenses, the selection of the right film (well, this was still valid in the year 2000!), exposure control and composition. The last chapter is about
working in the field: generally how to approach you object. Johns writing is very fluidly read and perhaps you feel like reading more. Even though he covers a
wide variety of topic I cannot say that he is only scratching the surface. If you want to know more about macro photography you should read his book ´Closeup
in Nature´ which I reviewed below.

Even though this is already a quite dated book and most equipment has changed since then quite dramatically, this is still the best and most
complete book I have read about Macro Photography. All major techniques like using extension tubes, tele converters, bellows but also macro flashlights,
reflectors and others are discussed in great detail. John does not only concentrate on the equipment itself but also explains its best usage, the technical
detail behind them. Detailed calculations of different macro techniques are carried out and will help to understand what works best. He explains how you can be
successful in macro photography without using the most expensive equipment and how you can have fun in macro photography with even a small amount of effective
tools. If you are planning to have a closer look into macro photography this will give you a good start and this book should be enough to enable you to capture
great macros.

This is one of the older books of John Shaw. If you have read his newer ´Nature Photography´, you will not find much more information in
here. But his great landscapes are also found here and this might be reason enough to also buy this book.

Wildlife Photography, Nigel Dennis, Sunbird Publishing, 2002, ISBN: 0-624-04064-X
I bought this book during a trip in the national parks of South Africa. This is also Nigels home field, this is where he shot most of the
photographs found in his book. He explains in good detail how to approach wildlife photography, what equipment you should use and how to approach your object.
It is recommended to read this book prior to travelling to a location and not as I did during a wildlife photography trip. Reading in advance enables you to
optimise your equipment and try out some of the techniques before approaching the wildlife. Some items required like flash extenders are not tat easily found
and you should plan in advance to order he equipment well before your trip. I have written an article about wildlife photography found in my technical section.

Der Deutsche Fotograf Fritz Pölkin beschreibt in diesem grossformatigen Band, der schon fast ein Bildband ist, seine Vorgehensweise bei der digitalen Naturfotografie. Ohne
Zweifel ein durch die vielen guten Naturaufnahmen inspirierendes Werk. Für mich geht der Autor aber zu wenig in die Details und kratzt teilweise nur an der Oberfläche. Es ist allerdings sehr schwer
zeitgemäss über den idealen Work-Flow bei der digitalen Fotografie zu schreiben, ändern sich doch die Soft- und Hardwaretools so schnell. Nicht desto trotz ist es wichtig sich
über die Vorgehensweise Gedanken zu machen. Hier findet man Anregungen dazu. |

If you are interested in bid photography, ´The art of Bird photography´ is a must. Even though this book is a little bit dated because t was
written in 1998 it doesn’t feel to be that old. Almost all techniques explained are still valid and will also be used in general wildlife photography. You will
find some similarities in the techniques used to the book from Nigel Dennis reviewed above. It is very impressive to see the wide selection of bird photographs
found in this book and this will also remind us that good photography was also possible with film

Lichtspiele in der Luft ist ein sehr umfassendes Werk über alle möglichen Arten von Lichterscheinungen in unserer
Atmosphäre.
Die Effekte werden wissenschaftlich sehr fundiert erklärt und man bekommt auch Hinweise, unter welchen Bedingungen man die Lichtspiele sehen kann.
Für manche mag der Text zu wissenschaftlich sein. Wer sich aber damit befasst, dem öffnet sich das Tor zu fesselnden Beobachtungen in der Natur.

Hans Häckel führt uns hier sehr verständlich in die Meteorologie ein. Nach genauem Studium lassen sich viele Wettergeschehen besser
interpretieren und verstehen. Das Buch bildet einen guten Einstieg in ein faszinierendes Gebiet. Der unten aufgeführte Bildband 'Farbatlas
Wetterphänomene' ist eigentlicher Bestandteil des Buches und es empfiehlt sich sehr, sich beide zusammen anzuschaffen.

Der Farbatlas Wetterphänomene ist Bildband zum oben genannten Werk 'Meteorologie' vom gleichen Autor. Die vielen farbigen Abbildungen laden zum selbstständigen
Beobachten und Fotografieren ein. Es ist äusserst spannend Wetterphänomene selbst zu beobachten und aufzunehmen; mit diesem Buch geht es leichter. Die vielen besprochenen Phänomene
öffnen ein reichhaltiges Betätigungsfeld und ein vollkommneres Naturerlebnis. Nachdem man den Farbatlas studiert hat beobachtet man viele Dinge anders. |

Der Wolkenatlas ist vor allem ein fotografisches Referenzwerk zu allen möglichen Wolkentypen. Das Buch hat schon einige Jahre auf dem Buckel, das sieht man den Aufnahmen auch an.
Nichts desto trotz kann ich den Atlas empfehlen: eine grosse Fülle an Wolkenaufnahmen, eine Beschreibung der Typen und Erläuterungen zu den meteorologischen Begriffen erleichtern
eine selbstständige Bestimmung der schwebenden Wassermassen und runden das Werk ab.

'Das Wetter' gibt einen guten Überblick über die heute bekannten Fakten der Meteorologie. Die zahlreichen guten, neuen Abbildungen machen Freude, viele Grafiken
erleichtern das Verständnis. Es werden nicht nur Themen wie Klimazonen, Atmosphäre und Mikroklima angesprochen. Ein Teil widmet sich auch den heute immer häufiger werdenden extremen
Wettersituationen wie Hurrikans, Überschwemmungen und Dürre. Auch die Wettervorhersage und Ihre Methoden finden ihren Platz. Spannend fand ich den kurzen Abriss über die Auswirkungen
des Wetters auf geschichtliche Ereignisse. Die Kapitel über Klima und dessen zukünftige Entwicklung runden den Band ab. Es ist wirklich erstaunlich, welche Qualität von Büchern
man heute für unter 10 Euro bekommt.

Vom Regenbogen zum Polarlicht, Kristian Schlegel, Spektrum Akademischer Verlag GmbH, 2001, ISBN: 3-8274-1174-2
Mich hat an diesem Band vor allem das sehr ausführliche Kapitel über Polarlichter interessiert. Über 20 Seiten behandeln dieses Thema in guter Tiefe und helfen
beim Grundsätzlichen Verständnis de Phänomene. Da ich das Buch im Winter in Finnisch Lappland gelesen habe konnte ich das gelesene direkt am Himmel beobachten. Aber nicht alleine
dieses Thema macht das Buch kaufenswert. Insbesondere ist der Mix aus atmosphärischen und ‚über atmosphärischen' Erscheinungen interessant. Neben Himmelsfarben, Regenbogen, Halos
findet auch ein sehr gutes Kapitel über Blitze und über Meteore Platz. Ein sehr ausführlicher Referenzteil rundet das Werk ab: Aus den Referenzen habe ich mir schon neue Bände
bestellt, i.e. das Buch macht neugierig auf Mehr. |

Polarstern: 25 Jahre Forschung in Arktis und Antarktis, Dieter Karl Fütterer, Eberhard Fahrbach, 2008, Dalius Klasing, ISBN: 978-3-7688-2433-0
Zu unseren jährlichen Winterferien im Norden gehören einfach Bücher über die Polarforschung dazu. Normalerweise sind das Bücher über die Polarforschung lang vergangener Zeiten, i.e. Amundsen, Nansen, Shackelton und co. Dieses mal habe ich mich an die aktuelle Forschung gewagt. Hier geht zwar alles viel nüchterner zu, die Naturgewalten hat man ein wenig besser im Griff bzw. die Technik erlaubt einem einen relativ komfortablen Vorstoss in die (ant)arktischen Gebiete. Begeisternd ist moderne Forschung aber dennoch immer wieder und welch grosse Vielfalt an Forschungsarbeiten auf der Polarstern betrieben werden sehr eindrücklich. Am liebsten möchte man gerne mal selber mitfahren. |
